Think of belly dancing and what comes to mind? Exoticism, Fry’s Turkish Delight? Forget that! For Frodsham’s Halabia Dancers, the two F’s apply - Fun and Friendship.
The troupe has 9 ladies with ages from 27 to 70, who all possess a love of middle eastern music and movement. There are many health benefits too, as dancing helps with musculoskeletal health, cardiovascular systems and a general sense of wellbeing. It also, very importantly, brings joy to audiences of all ages, from babies to recently a 100-year-old lady!
The troupe started 19 years ago under the expert tuition of Sue Blanchard who at one time held three classes. Numbers gradually reduced but popularity is now growing nationally and internationally.
The essence of belly dancing is learning to isolate different muscle groups and create a seamless movement. This can take a long time to master hence the need for Sue’s expertise and infinite patience.
Performing for the public really binds the group together and they play a large part in our community, dancing at the Festival in the Park, the Christmas Festival as well as nursing homes, Women’s Institute and Mothers Union. They are not recruiting new members at the moment. They consider requests for performances at non-profit making community events.
